Brandi Carlile on KCRW

I saw a couple of shows since Sunday's Rainer Maria gig that I posted about earlier. Brandi Carlile headlined the TLA on South Street Wednesday night and put on a fantastic show. I was particularly impressed with her drummer - he made the songs rock a little harder than they might've otherwise. I've already posted a couple of times about my affinity for Carlile's music, so I won't repeat myself. Rainer Maria in Philly

Rainer Maria rocked the First Unitarian Church last night in Philadelphia, playing lots of tunes from their latest along with a few fan faves from their extensive back catalogue. It was my first Rainer Maria show and I must say I was very impressed. Drummer William Kuehn was awesome, guitarist Kyle Fischer was all over the little stage, and bassist/singer Caithlin De Marrais' voice soared over the band's driving live sound. Opener Ambulette (I got there too late to hear first act, Pela) sounded very cool too. Bummer they didn't have any copies of their EP for sale.

Buffalo Tom: New Tourdates + Old Music

Buffalo Tom was one of the best pop rock bands to come out of the thriving Boston scene of the 90s. They're playing a few select shows, including two in New York, over the next few weeks. Count me in for sure. Here are the dates:

While trolling Dime A Dozen and Pure Live Gigs recently, I came across a radio show that Buffalo Tom did in 1998 promoting Smitten. Great acoustic performance of four tunes from that record.

Live Concert Post #7: Richard Ashcroft 03-07-06

I stumbled across Fabchannel when I followed a link to see a full Sarah Bettens concert stream online a couple of weeks ago. I'll eventually post that show too, but recently Fabchannel uploaded video of this Richard Ashcroft acoustic gig from the Paradiso in Amsterdam. He rocks out some of his new tunes, along with a killer version of "Bittersweet Symphony", with a stripped down version of his touring band. The files are MP3 as usual.

Thom Yorke To Release Solo Album

The net was abuzz (i.e. sites like greenplastic) with the news that Radiohead singer Thom Yorke has finished a record that he worked on by himself with producer Nigel Godrich. The record is called The Eraser and is due out July 11 on XL Recordings. The tracklist, as reported by Pitchfork, follows.

Audioslave: AOL Music Session

Audioslave's AOL Music Session featured a solo acoustic version of "Doesn't Remind Me" by Chris Cornell and covers of Soundgarden's "Loud Love" and Rage Against The Machine's "Sleep Now In The Fire". The slight overload on the vocals during Cornell's solo song is in the original recording, unfortunately. Still, it's a compelling performance from one of the best rock singers of the past decade and a half. All files are MP3.

Pearl Jam: AOL Music Session

There are a bunch of great live performance videos at AOL Music Sessions. Pearl Jam did one recently to promote their new record, and the setlist was great. Eddie Vedder's solo version of "Gone", and outstanding performances of b-sides "Hard To Imagine" and "Sad" made for a real treat for fans. I Am Fuel, You Are Friends has the three new Radiohead tunes up from Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood's performance at the recent benefit gig for Friends of the Earth: The Big Ask.

Awesome Until Proven Guilty has tracks up from the new Snow Patrol record if you can't wait until its official US release date on Tuesday 5/9.

Ear Farm has Tool's performance from this year's Coachella Festival. Not a bad audience recording at all.

Pearl Jam: Post-Letterman Gig

Pearl Jam played Letterman last Thursday and after the taping performed a special show for the selected few fans that were able to get into the Ed Sullivan Theater. The performance was broadcast live on the net and someone was kind enough to share the Real Video file. I took the liberty of ripping the audio to MP3.

Stephen Colbert Is My Hero

If you haven't already seen his appearance at the White House Press Correspondents Dinner, here's a link to a site hosting the video. Talk about guts! To say the things he says with President Bush sitting a few feet away...unbelievable.

There's a full story on Colbert's appearance at Editor and Publisher. An excerpt:

As Colbert walked from the podium, when it was over, the president and First Lady gave him quick nods, unsmiling. The president shook his hand and tapped his elbow, and left immediately.

Those seated near Bush told E&P's Joe Strupp, who was elsewhere in the room, that Bush had quickly turned from an amused guest to an obviously offended target as Colbert’s comments brought up his low approval ratings and problems in Iraq.

Whoever booked Colbert must've known what they were getting, so I'm not sure why some folks are so bent out of shape over his routine. He does this kind of stuff all the time on his Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report.

Live Concert Post #6: Tool 06-23-93

I've been unable to stop listening to the new Tool record 10,000 Days ever since I got my grubby little hands on it yesterday. It's early yet, but initial reports indicate that it's freaking awesome.

I'd never heard of Tool before the '93 Lolapolooza tour, and my brother and I were totally blown away by their performance when the tour stopped off in Philly. Maynard swaying back and forth hypnotically while staring straight ahead into space, singing "You lie, cheat and steal" over and over (from "Intolerance" as I later learned) is the lasting memory I have of that gig. Though I don't have a recording of my first Tool live experience, I do have this soundboard show from the '93 tour. As usual, all files are MP3. Enjoy.
