B-Side Of The Week: Gemma Hayes

This week's b-side comes from Irish singer/songwriter Gemma Hayes, a Sweet Oblivion favorite. "Perfect Day" was recorded during the sessions for her sophomore effort, The Roads Don't Love You. If you don't know Ms. Hayes' work, check out some of the previous posts on this blog to get a sample of her unique mix of folksy ballads, pop anthems, and Brit-style noise rock.

Monday Morning Live: Muse

Your weekly dose of high quality live recordings (no audience boots here!).

This week I'm featuring a blistering live track from Muse. "Stockholm Syndrome" is one of the most rocking tracks off 2004's Absolution, and the band tags an extra bit of foot-stomping riff-ology at the end for good measure. Hold on to your hats...

Cover Of The Week: Buffalo Tom does The Velvet Underground

This week's cover features our old friends from Boston, Buffalo Tom, cranking out the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties". Singer Bill Janovitz mentioned in the liner notes of Besides, most likely facetiously, that he was proud of his Chris Cornell-style scream toward the end of the track. You'll have to decide for yourself whether Janovitz hits or misses.

B-Side Of The Week: Juliana Hatfield

The prolific Juliana Hatfield recorded many b-sides early in her career, and most of them are as good as the songs on her proper albums. This week's track deserves recognition not only for being a good song, but also for its ultra-sweet indie rock title, "Girl In Old Blue Volvo Disowns Self".

Monday Morning Live: Sheryl Crow

Your weekly dose of high quality live recordings (no audience boots here!).

As I've mentioned before, I used to love Sheryl Crow's music. After her 3rd album, she lost me, but I recently revisited some of her old live performances and came across this gem from a concert broadcast on the radio back in 1994. "No One Said It Would Be Easy", like most of the songs on her first album, seemed sterile on record compared to the way it slowly burns when performed with her live band on stage, and I've always been fond of its melancholy mood. As an aside, the tune was featured in the movie Kalifornia, starring David Duchovny, Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis.

Cover Of The Week: Kristen Barry does Neil Young

Almost ten years ago I saw Chris Whitley play a killer show at Fletcher's in Baltimore. The opener was a woman from Seattle named Kristen Barry who totally rocked the crowd into fandom. One of the tunes she played during her set was this Neil Young cover, which she had also recorded for her first and only album. It's a great version of the song, and it's a shame that she hasn't made any more music that's commercially available. After all, she thanked Soundgarden in her liner notes, so she's got the right kind of influences/friends in my book.

B-Side Of The Week: The Black Crowes

It's been too long since my first Black Crowes b-side post, so I thought it was high time I put another one up. "Darling Of The Underground Press" was on the "Remedy" singles released for 1992's stellar The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. It's been a part of live sets from time to time, and it features a nifty little acoustic slide guitar riff.

B-Side Of The Week: Pearl Jam

I've wanted to post a Pearl Jam b-side for a while, but since they released a b-sides record, Lost Dogs, I thought I'd post this little gem instead. It's off the Merkinball EP, which was recorded at the same time that they backed Neil Young for his Mirrorball album. Sometimes appearing as the opening song of live sets, "Long Road" is a great tune that would've been at home on a proper Pearl Jam record.

Cover Of The Week: Mark Kozelek does AC/DC

I saw the Steve Martin/Claire Danes film Shopgirl again the other day, and it reminded me to revisit Mark Kozelek's music. The frontman for Red House Painters and sometime solo artist made a guest appearance in the movie, and hearing him sing in the film led me back to his 2001 AC/DC covers album, What's Next To The Moon. Kozelek's renditions of AC/DC tunes bear little to no musical resemblance to the originals. Instead, he found a way to reinterpret the music while exploring the lyrical content in a different way. The "cock rock" anthems take on a deeper feel in Kozelek's hands, and the record makes for very interesting listening.

B-Side Of The Week: Turin Brakes

This week we visit the b-side catalog of British acoustic rockers Turin Brakes. They have an extensive collection of b-sides in their repertoire, and this one has always been a favorite of mine. It's a mellow tune, comprised of only acoustic guitars and vocals, but it builds nicely toward the end. Something about the sentiment of the song resonates with me in a significant way.
